Here is a free crochet pattern of a beanie with chevrons for men and kids alike.
This will definitely be noticeable enough so you can spot them in the crowd. Utilizing different color combinations, you can personalize the beanies for the whole family.
For kids chevron beanie size is – Circumference 18”, Height 7.5”
For adult chevron beanie size is – Circumference 22”, Height 9”
Hook: US- I 9 / 5.50MM
Yarn: Red Heart Super Saver, worsted yarn, (for adult size – 150 yards / for kids size 120 yards)
Shade I used in this Beanie – Hunter Green, Spring Green, Burgundy
Tapestry Needle for weaving ends
All terms used are in USA terminology
Ch: Chain, Sc: Single Crochet, Dc: Double Crochet, Hdc: Half Double Crochet, Sl st: Slip Stitch, Trc: Treble Crochet, Cl: Cluster, Sk: Skip, Beg: Beginning
Shell: 2dc-ch1-2dc in next ch or ch1 sp.
Beg Back Post Double Crochet (Beg Bpdc): Ch1, insert hook from back to front to back around post of same dc and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook, ch1. [Beg Bpdc made]
Back Post Double Crochet (Bpdc): Yarn over, insert hook from back to front to back around post of next dc and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook, yarn over and draw through remaining 2 loops on hook. [Bpdc made]

Round 2: Beg Bpdc3tog, (bpdc in next dc) 4 times, shell in next shell, (bpdc in next dc) 4 times, *bpdc3tog, (bpdc in next dc) 4 times, shell in next shell, (bpdc in next dc) 4 times, rep * around, bpdc in next dc but leave the last two loops on hook, sk next dc, sl st in beg bpdc3tog to complete bpdc3tog, change color.

Closing the top: (applies to all beanie sizes) Leave at least 15 inches long tail, cut off. Use tapestry needle, insert the needle in inner loop of each st around, pull the yarn gently. Turn the beanie to wrong side, weave ends then cut the excess yarn.
Use yarn color that you use in round 3 & 4 or your desired color.
Round 1: Attach yarn in 1ch sp, ch1, sc in the same sp, sc in next st, hdc in next 2sts, dc in next st, cl, dc in next st, hdc in next 2sts, sc in next st, sc in next 1ch sp, sl st in next st, * sc in next 1ch sp, sc in next st, hdc in next 2sts, dc in next st,cl, dc in next st, hdc in next 2sts, sc in next st, sc in next 1ch sp, sl st in next st, rep * around, end w/ sl st in 1st sc to join.
Round 2: Ch1, sc in the same st, sc in each sts around, end w/ sl st in 1st sc to join.
Round 3-4: Repeat round 2.
Round 5: Sl st in each st around, in your last sl st, drop the yarn, insert hook from wrong side to right side and catch the drop yarn as shown on photo below, pull the yarn in wrong side.
Fasten off, use tapestry to weave in ends.
