Here you can find one of a few technique on how to increase shell st, it has photo tutorial in each step to guide you.
Another crochet technique on how to increase shell st is by increasing number of
your chain or double crochet in your shell st.
I break this crochet technique tutorial in two
1. Open shell (increasing number of chain in shell st)
2. Close Shell (increasing number of dc)
Here's how to decrease shell st in this link.
Ch : Chain ; Dc : Double Crochet ; Sp : Space
V-st: dc-ch1-dc in specified st
Open Shell st: 2dc-ch2-2dc in specified st
Close Shell: 5dc in specified st
In this tutorial, our shell st is 2dc-ch2-2dc. We have to start our beginning row with a smaller rows of chain and double crochet then gradually we increase those stitches in between until we reach our Shell Stitch - 2dc -ch2- 2dc.
Foundation 12
Row 1: Dc in 5th ch from hook, dc across. (9dc)
Row 2: Ch3 (consider as 1st dc), turn, (v-st in next st, dc in next dc) across.
Row 3: Ch3 (consider as 1st dc), turn, (v-st over v-st, dc in next dc) across.
Row 4: Ch3 (consider as 1st dc), turn, (2dc-ch1-2dc over v-st , dc in next dc) across.
Row 5: Ch3 (consider as 1st dc), turn, (2dc-ch1-2dc in next 1ch sp, dc in next dc) across.
Row 6: Ch3 (consider as 1st dc), turn, (shell st in 1ch sp, dc in next dc) across. [4 shell st]
Row 7: Repeat row 6
Sample of Open Shell St
In this tutorial, our shell st is 5dc in specified st. I called it Close Shell St because of it's solid texture. We have to start our beginning row with a smaller rows of double crochet then gradually we increase those stitches until we will reach our Close Shell Stitch - 5dc.
Foundation 12
Row 1: Dc in 5th ch from hook, dc across. (9dc)
Row 2: Ch1, turn, sc in the same st, (dc in next dc, sc in next dc) across.
Row 3: Ch3 (consider as 1st dc), turn, dc in the same st, sc in next dc, 2dc in next sc, (sc in next dc, 2dc in next sc) across.
Row 4: Ch1, turn, sc in the same st, sk next dc, 3dc in next sc, (sk next dc, sc in next dc, 3dc in next sc, sk next dc, sc in next dc) across.
Row 5: Ch3 (consider as 1st dc), turn, dc in the same st, sk next dc, sc in next dc, sk dc, (3dc in next sc, sk next dc, sc in next dc, sk dc) across, 2dc in last sc st.
Row 6: Ch1, turn, sc in the same st, (sk next dc, 2dc-ch1-2dc in next sc, sk next dc, sc in next dc) across.
Row 7: Ch3, turn, 2dc in the same st, sc in next 1ch sp, (5dc in next sc, sc in next 1ch sp) across, 3dc in next sc.
Row 8: Ch1, turn, sc in the same st, (sk next 2dc, 5dc in next sc, sk next 2dc, sc next dc) across.
